The Challenge

Higher education has a skills alignment crisis.

Academic programs evolve on multi-year cycles. Employer skill requirements shift quarterly. The gap between what institutions teach and what employers need is growing — and students are caught in the middle.

77%
of academic programs have fewer than 20% of graduates entering the fields their CIP codes predict, according to real outcome data.
5yr
is the shelf life of the average technical skill. Curricula updated on 7-10 year accreditation cycles cannot keep pace.
$2B
annual cost of skill shortages to employers in the form of higher salaries, recruitment costs, and temporary staffing.
“Breaking job roles down into required skill sets can allow employers to better understand viable job transition pathways and make more informed decisions on reskilling and upskilling.”
— World Economic Forum, Global Skills Taxonomy Adoption Toolkit, 2025
How RelevEd Works

From curriculum to career —
measured, mapped, and actionable.

RelevEd provides a continuous, data-driven feedback loop between what your programs teach and what the labor market demands.

01
Map Your Programs
We connect your academic programs (CIP codes) to target occupations (SOC codes) using the federal CIP-SOC crosswalk, then layer in O*NET’s detailed skill and knowledge requirements for each occupation.

02
Assess Skill Coverage
Using AI-powered natural language processing, we analyze your course syllabi and curriculum documents to infer which skills are being taught — then compare coverage against what employers need.

Powered by Authoritative Data

Not opinions.
Evidence.

RelevEd’s alignment framework is built on the same data infrastructure used by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and leading workforce researchers.

O*
O*NET Content Model
923 occupations. 19,000+ task statements. 2,000+ detailed work activities. The U.S. Department of Labor’s authoritative skills taxonomy — updated quarterly — forms the backbone of our alignment scoring.
LC
Lightcast Labor Market Intelligence
33,000+ skills extracted from over 1 billion job postings across 40,000 sources — updated biweekly. We surface which skills are surging in demand before traditional taxonomies catch up.
CP
CIP-SOC Federal Crosswalk
The official NCES/BLS mapping between 6-digit academic program codes and occupational classifications. This bridge connects every program at your institution to its target career outcomes.
AI
AI Skill Inference (Syllabus2O*NET)
Based on peer-reviewed NLP methodology published in Nature Scientific Data, our AI analyzes course syllabi to measure which O*NET skills your curriculum actually develops — at scale.

TJ
About the Founder

Built by someone who has lived on both sides of the problem.

TJ Rains brings over two decades of higher education leadership — including CIO and Chief Transformation Officer roles at multiple institutions — combined with deep expertise in workforce technology and organizational change.

His doctoral research produced the Higher Education Leadership Triad (HELT) model, based on interviews with university presidents who navigated institutional disruption. That research, combined with his current role as Managing Director for Higher Education at Workday, gave him a front-row seat to the skills alignment crisis — and the conviction to build the solution.

RelevEd is not a theory. It’s the platform TJ wished he had at every institution he served.
